8 Nights Exploring Lima, The Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu
April 20th - April 28th, 2025
DAY 1: April 20th, 2025 - Lima
Welcome to colorful Peru. Upon arrival into Lima International Airport, you will be met by our representative and private driver and will be transferred to your hotel. Our representative will assist you with check-in procedures and provide you with a detailed itinerary, vouchers covering all the services included in your tour and additional information on the organization of your Peru trip. Overnight in Lima - Relais & Chateaux Hotel B Aposento Room Meals: On your own DAY 2: April 21st, 2025 - Lima Colonial Lima City Tour, Casa Aliaga & Larco Museum We enjoy a half day guided sightseeing tour to the most attractive and important sites in Lima, the "City of Kings". Visit Lima's Historical Center, passing by Plaza San Martin, Plaza Mayor, the Government Palace, the City Hall, the Cathedral and its Religious Art Museum (closed on Sunday and Saturday pm; Santo Domingo Convent is provided instead on these days) as well as San Francisco Monastery and its famous underground crypts known as the Catacombs. Still in downtown Lima, we visit "Casa de Aliaga", the oldest Colonial mansion in Lima, maybe even in whole South America. The house has been owned and lived in by the Aliaga family and their descendants since Franzisco Pizarro granted the land to Jerónimo de Aliaga in 1535. Originally there was a pre-Colombian altar on that plot of land owned by "Curaca Tauli Chusco" (the reign of the Rimac valley). We continue with a stop at Larco Herrera Museum, for an excellent overview of Peru's ancient past as it holds the best private collection of pre-Columbian art in the country. We have the chance to tour through this old Hacienda House in the Pueblo Libre district, which was built upon a pre-Incan sacred site (huaca), housing the private collection of a great Peruvian scholar: Don Rafael Larco Hoyle. The Larco Herrera Museum is one of the few museums in the world that allows such intimate access to its deposits, in this case around 45,000 pieces. Another attraction of the museum and of great interest to visitors is the exhibition of erotic pre-Colombian art. Overnight in Lima - Relais & Chateaux Hotel B Aposento Room Meals: Breakfast & Lunch. Dinner on your own DAY 3: April 22nd, 2025 - Lima to The Sacred Valley At the appropriate time, our representative will meet you at the hotel lobby and transfer you to the Lima Airport to board your next flight. Our representative will assist you with check-in procedures and all departure formalities. En route to the Sacred Valley, you will have the opportunity to visit an Andean textile center whose key objective is to maintain the wealth of Incan textile art and keep their traditions alive. Here we will learn about the dyeing techniques and instruments used for hundreds of years in the weaving of these famous textiles. You will walk along a thatched roof path and will watch and learn about the four different kinds of South American camels: Huanaco, Llama, Alpaca and Vicuña. At the end of the path you will find weavers from over 12 communities from southern Peru who alternate exhibitions of threading, dying and weaving traditional Andean textiles, thus avoiding their identity loss. Overnight Sacred Valley Tambo Del Inka, Luxury Collection Resort Deluxe Room Meals: Breakfast. Lunch & Dinner on your own. DAY 4: April 23rd, 2025 - Sacred Valley Maras Saltpans, Moray Terraces & Ollantaytambo We embark on a journey through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, to the Maras Saltpans and its seemingly never-ending terraces, where salt extracted from springs is stored. The use of Maras Salt dates back thousands of years and is inherited from generation to generation and managed communally. It is impressive to see the variety of colors created by the reflection of the sun’s rays in this field of salt deposits, and to learn about the Incas striking ability to generate resources. We continue our excursion to admire the Moray terraces, believed to be a former gigantic agricultural laboratory, an astronomical observatory or a place of worship, or maybe all three. It is thought that Moray was used for plant adaptation to new climatic environments thanks to its circular terraces in immense cone-shaped depressions of 47 to 84 m that resemble giant fingerprints or contour lines. Deluxe Picnic Lunch with Service Today we will experience an unexpected lunch in the middle of nature with unique views than range from mirror-like lakes to magnificent mountains. We will find ourselves surrounded by beautiful landscapes, sipping a wine, admiring the stunning view of the Andes Mountains and having a traditional Andean picnic lunch unlike any other. We can select from different picnic spots – Chincheros, Urcos, Pisac, Maras, Huaypo lagoon, Urubamba, Ollantaytambo or Sacsayhuaman which are all located in stunning, natural settings in the Sacred Valley or in Cusco. Waterproof tents and transparent covers are expected if we experience a windy day. Then, we head to the Inca fortress and citadel of Ollantaytambo. This site was built just as the Spaniards arrived and evidence of how it was constructed is still visible. This fortress was believed to be constructed in order to guard the entrance to this part of the valley and protect it from possible invasions of tribes from the jungle lowlands. Overnight Sacred Valley Tambo Del Inka, Luxury Collection Resort Deluxe Room Meals: Breakfast & Lunch. Dinner on your own. DAY 5: April 24th, 2025 - Sacred Valley to Machu Picchu Full day excursion to Machu Picchu via roundtrip train We begin with a morning transfer to the train station for an amazing train journey to the famous Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu, the great mountain-top city abandoned by the Inca Empire, reclaimed by the jungle and lost to humanity until its rediscovery in 1911. Along the way we will enjoy the changing landscape as we travel from Andean highlands to the beginnings of the jungle (“eyebrow of the jungle”), before finally arriving at the town of Aguas Calientes. From here, we board the bus that will take us on a 20-minute ride up to the citadel of Machu Picchu (3,400masl/11,15ft), or Lost City of the Incas. Here, we take a guided tour of the Citadel, probably the most amazing urban creation of the Inca Empire, with its giant walls, terraces and ramps, which appear as though they have been cut naturally in the continuous rock escarpments. Buffet Lunch at Tinkuy Restaurant - Sanctuary Lodge A high quality novoandean-international buffet restaurant situated right at the entrance of Machu Picchu, located in the same building as the luxury Belmond Sanctuary Lodge property. Overnight in Aguas Calientes Inkaterra Machu Picchu Pueblo Hotel Superior Room Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner. DAY 6: April 25th, 2023 - Machu Picchu to Cusco 2nd Entrance to Machu Picchu Today is an excellent opportunity to wake up early and enjoy a beautiful sunrise as well as stroll around the Town of Machu Picchu and visit their Hot Springs. Then, you will have time to visit the Citadel of Machu Picchu for a second time. In the afternoon, return by train and upon arrival at the train station you will be met by our representative and private driver for your transfer to the hotel. Overnight in Cusco Relais & Châteaux Inkaterra La Casona Balcony Suite Meals: Breakfast. Lunch & Dinner on your own. DAY 7: April 26th, 2025 - Cusco Ancient Landmarks City Experience Today we will discover the archaeological capital of South America, a city of amazing cobblestone streets and original Inca walls, the magnificent Cusco. Among the city's most important historical monuments that reveal the influence of different cultures, is the Santo Domingo church built upon the foundations of the Inca Temple Koricancha, an impressive site dedicated to worship the Sun God. From this point, we head to the San Cristobal view point that dominates a privileged view of the city of Cusco, undoubtedly a special and magical place, a must for those photography lovers in search of portraying different angles of the Imperial city. Then, we continue to the Sacsayhuaman Archaeological site or Fortress, a ceremonial compound and magnificent example of Inca military power also offering a panoramic view of the City. Next stop is at the Inca Baths of Tambomachay. Finally, we head to the Main Plaza of Cusco to enjoy a guided tour of the Cathedral, dating from Spanish viceroyalty times, built with great slabs of red granite renaissance style in contrast with the baroque style silverwork of its interior, a true architectural gem. Overnight in Cusco Relais & Châteaux Inkaterra La Casona Balcony Suite Meals: Breakfast. Lunch & Dinner on your own. DAY 8: April 27th, 2025 - Cusco Day at leisure A day at leisure to explore and enjoy the many excellent cafés, bars and innovative restaurants in Cusco or for any last-minute shopping. Be sure to keep an attentive eye open for spotting surprises! Its almost unbelievable how with every step you find something along the way. Almost definitely Anaconda, Rainbow Boas, Tarantulas, Poison Frogs, and most recently porquepines have been spotted. This is one of the very few places in the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve Amazon Rainforest where you will spot the ever so elusive 2-toed sloth. Yanayacu Pucate: You will start cruising through the Yanayacu and Pucate Rivers, peeking into different creeks and lagoons. This is one of the best preserved and protected zones of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Your guide will use his expert eye to pinpoint all the biodiversity of this region. If you want to interact directly with the waters of the Amazon, go out on one of our kayaks or paddle boards. You will even have the opportunity to see the famous pink dolphins! Yachay: The village of Yachay is a flyspeck that receives few outside visitors, and even fewer come to seek out the Shaman, Carola. Carola is known far and wide in the rainforest, leading a normal village life with her wood carver husband, while at the same time acting as spiritual caretaker and healer to literally hundreds of jungle dwellers spread over many roadless miles. Her prestige and position are beyond reproach. The role of shaman is often misunderstood in the west, associated with black magic, and spells. While these things all have their place, the actual practitioners are as varied as in any profession. Carola is known as a “White” shaman, a healer and spiritual guide. Overnight on board The Delfin III Suite Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner DAY 12: May 1st, 2025 - Amazon River You will have the oportunity to have a natural walk to learn about medicinal plants. The Peruvian Amazon region is considered the largest pharmaceutical reserve in the world with 965 species of wild plants and 59 cultivated plant species that local people use to cure and to prevent many illnesses. You will see that “Terra Firma” forest of a local ribereño is eye-opening to how far we have come in this day and age and a reflection of how simple yet rewarding life is for others. Palm Forest: This day you will have reached our main goal, the Palm Forest at the very heart of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, Peru’s largest protected area with a mean annual rainfall of nearly 3,000 millimeters, by far the largest protected wetland reserve in the world. Filled with lakes, palm swamps, and streams, the reserve becomes a flooded forest in the rainy season and is sure to be one of the most beautiful places you’ll ever visit. You will also have the chance to explore one of the pristine Amazon lagoons in this wonderful region! Overnight on board The Delfin III Suite Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner DAY 13: May 2nd, 2023 - Amazon River We will look for the famous hoatzins nesting a few feet above water, and perhaps a sloth or two of the three toed kind. The Samiria River can also be home to troops of brown capuchin monkeys mixed up with squirrel monkeys. As the sunsets our aim will be looking for black and white caiman, fishing bats, and Noisy Nights Monkeys where you will encounter a whole new world of adventure. Our skiffs skim the Samiria River and its tributaries, where an abundance of wildlife hides in the deep rainforest, such as blue and yellow macaws, scarlet macaws, toucans, umbrella birds, monkeys, and river others, capybaras and more. Our naturalists and his expert eye pinpoint all the biodiversity of this region. This is also a popular dolphin feeding spot so we won´t be the only one enjoying the plethora of fish below. Confluence of the 3 rivers: Better known as the “Unión de los Ríos” we will toast and witness the distinguished colors of the 3 rivers. It is known that the Ucayali River, which in turn confluences with the Marañón River upstream of Iquitos, Peru, to form what countries other than Brazil consider to be the main stem of the Amazon River. Great photo opportunity as you witness your first Amazon Rainforest Sunset. San Francisco community: On board our skiffs, you will visit the community of San Francisco to meet local villagers who have called Amazonia their home for generations. You may step into a typical schoolhouse where the children will be very happy to have visitors, and then stop by an area to see the women of this community who have a most amazing arts & craft market. Piranha Creek: We head down into the Marañon River to a location known as Piraña Caño. We had the option to explore the creek either by kayak or by skiff, and they were both fantastic choices! This lovely creek which leads to a lagoon is an ideal place to spend some time in search of birds and playful monkeys. As your naturalist guide spots various creatures for you, also try to pinpoint some yourself now that you’ve been in the jungle for a few days and have trained your eye a bit! Kayakers will endure the feeling of paddling down the river with only the noises of the forest as your companion. he encounters with wildlife are abundant. The landscape adorned by the usual colors of the sun´s reflections by whichever mode of transportation is stunning. So sit back and enjoy the beauty of the Amazon forest!
